Artist Statement
My artistic journey began at the age of 6, when I attended weekend classes at the The Art Institute of Chicago. These classes, held in the museum's basement, were just the beginning of my exploration into the world of art. My artistic education extended beyond the institute's walls through field trips to various museums across Chicago including the Museum of Science and Industry, Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium, and Lincoln Park Zoo. During these visits, I had the opportunity to sketch and draw an amazing collection of animals, science, natural history, art and artifacts. Exposure to these experiences provided an unbelievable visual education at an early age, presenting a broad overview of nature and civilization that fueled my imagination as a young person and still does today.
Animals have always been an important part of my life. Nature, as it is, is a testament to the incredible creativity happening all around us. As an artist, my question is, “How will we create a world where both animals and people can exist together?”
Working across the mediums of painting and drawing, I have expanded my skills to include digital art and printmaking. This evolution in my artistic practice allowed me to develop ideas for painting but now I use painting and drawing to develop concepts for digital prints. By combining more traditional drawing and painting techniques with computer drawn and digitally produced concepts, I hope to create a structure that allows me to revisit past and future ideas with the same directness I found making art as a child.
